LEVL Care Ceases Operations

LEVL Care, the company known for its FDA approved ketone breath meter, suddenly stopped operations with no explanation given.

This abrupt shutdown happened in June 2023, confirmed by the fact that the company’s website, levlcare.com, was no longer accessible from that point onward. (1

Unfortunately, there’s no public information available about why the company closed its doors. They didn’t release a press statement or any other type of public communication about it.

Prior to the shutdown, LEVL Care seemed to be less active on social media.

  • The last post on their Facebook page was in 2021 (2)
  • The last post on their LinkedIn profile was in 2022 (3)
  • Their most recent press release was even further back, in 2020 (4)

LEVL Care was originally founded in 2009 in the U.S. and was able to raise a private seed funding round in 2019. (5)

The company’s main product was a device called LEVL, a ketone breath meter. This device was primarily designed for clinical use, assisting health professionals in monitoring their clients’ adherence to low-carb diets.

It’s unclear what went wrong for a company with such a unique and potentially helpful product. But for now, LEVL Care is no more.

LEVL Ketone Breath Meter

The LEVL ketone breath meter was a tool that could tell you how much fat your body was burning. It was a medical device developed by a company called LEVL, which specialized in creating products that could help people reach their weight-loss goals.

  • The meter worked by measuring the CO2 concentration and acetone levels in your breath, which are two things that change when your body starts burning fat.

This device was registered with the FDA and was HIPAA compliant, meaning it met the necessary standards for privacy and security.
  • It was primarily designed for use in clinics, so healthcare professionals could use it to monitor the progress of their patients.

One of the key features of the LEVL meter was its ability to provide unique insights into your metabolism.

By measuring low levels of ketones (a type of chemical your body produces when it burns fat), the meter could tell you exactly how your body was responding to your diet.

If your body was in a state of elevated fat metabolism, the meter would pick up on it, allowing you to track your progress and adjust your diet if necessary.

Another big benefit of the LEVL meter was that it could help you personalize your weight loss plan. By giving you a prediction of how much fat your body was burning each week, it allowed you to tailor your diet and exercise plan to your specific needs.

This made it a great tool for anyone on a weight loss journey, regardless of what diet or exercise program they were following. Plus, because the device was FDA cleared, it was covered by insurance, which made it an accessible option for many people.

In short, the LEVL ketone breath meter was a useful tool for anyone looking to lose weight. By providing accurate and personalized data on your metabolism, it made the weight loss journey a little easier and a lot more effective.

How LEVL Worked

LEVL used to offer two innovative devices, the LEVLhome and the LEVLpro. The LEVLhome was designed for personal use, while the LEVLpro was tailored for use by health and wellness professionals.

These devices weren’t cheap, with home and pro versions costing $699, plus monthly fees. The price included the device itself, an app, sensor refills, and calibration gas, while the pro version also provided a client dashboard, training and education, and special support.

The LEVL device was able to detect low levels of ketones as the body transitioned into a state of elevated fat metabolism, making it a handy tool for diet monitoring.

As your body started to use more fat for energy and less carbohydrates, your breath acetone concentration would increase. This could take between 3-7 days, reaching a peak level of breath acetone.

By monitoring this, the LEVL device helped users understand how their diet and exercise routines were impacting their body’s state of ketosis and fat loss rate.

The LEVL device delivered results in just 15 seconds, allowing users to track their fat burning in real-time with their clinicians, nutritionists, or trainers.

This helped to motivate users and confirm diet adherence, providing a true understanding of how their bodies were working to lose weight and maintain it.

LEVL was FDA cleared and HIPAA compliant, and some users could even get reimbursements for the test, although this varied by state and provider. Unfortunately, the company is no longer active.
